Module 1

Introduction

Marburg virus disease is a severe illness of humans and non-human primates caused by either of the two Marburg Virus (MARV) and Ravn Virus (RAVV). MVD is a viral Marburg hemorrhagic fever.

Endemic zones

The natural maintenance hosts of marburg viruses remain to be identified unmistakable. However, the isolation of the Marburg virus from Bats and the Correlation of various Marburg Virus Disease outbreaks mainly suggests that bats are indulged in Marburg virus transmission to Humans. Visits to caves and avoidance of contact with bats is highly recommended, but may not be possible for those working in mines or people dependent on bats as a food source.

During outbreaks

Since Marburg viruses are not transmitted through air droplets, and the most common prevention mechanism for Marburg virus disease outbreaks is to get rid out from direct contact with affected peoples, and their body fluids or any contaminated materials like clothes and utensils. Isolation is must for patients, but still its safe for family members to take a visit . Medical staff should apply strict barrier nursing techniques (disposable face mask, gloves, goggles, and a gown at all times) and also be  trained. Traditional burry rituals, especially those requiring prservation of bodies, should be discouraged or modified, ideally with the help of local Traditional Healers.

In the laboratory

Marburg viruses are World Health Organisation Risk Group 4 Pathogens, requiring Biosafety level 4-equuivalent containment, laboratory researchers have to be properly trained in BSL-4 practices and wear proper personal protective equipment.
