Types of Gene Therapy
With the help of Gene delivery mechanism, there are various approaches for replacing the defective genes by healthy genes. Gene therapy is classified into two different ways :
Somatic Gene Therapy
Germ-Line Gene Therapy
1) Somatic Gene Therapy
In the case of Somatic Gene therapy, the replacement of defective gene by a healthy gene in somatic cells (also called non- reproductive cells), the effects caused by this process restricted to patients only, it will not transfer to the future off-springs or generations.
2) Germ-Line Gene Therapy
In this case, targeting the germ cells makes the process heritable means the foreign gene will transfer to the next or future generations.
